How To Get The Enchanted Sword In Terraria

There are a few threads about this already; I thought I would make some sort of compendium post about the Enchanted Sword in Terraria 1.4.

This post is being written while current Terraria version is 1.4.0.5.

This article concerns the PC (desktop) version of the game. If you are playing on another platform, please refer to the various linked Wiki articles; they give a lot of info about them.

What is the Enchanted Sword?

The Enchanted Sword is a melee weapon obtainable quite early in the game, and while it has been recently nerfed a bit, it remains a very powerful weapon for new characters.

It regained some importance in 1.4, as it is a craft component for the ultimate sword in the game : the Zenith:

Where can I find the Enchanted Sword?

It drops from a "Sword in Stone" background object, which mainly spawns in the "Enchanted Sword Shrines" terrain feature. Prior to 1.4 these shrines where quite common, but since 1.4 they have become much rarer.

On the PC version of the game, according to the size of your world, you have from 40% up to 60% chance of not having a single shrine in the world. Larger worlds have greater chance of having 1 shrine or more.

The "Sword in Stone" can also be found anywhere in the world. Confirmed in Cavern Layer for example here:

1.4 map, seed 2.3.2.1232098214 (Master mode)

If you use map tools such as Terrafirma, you have to search for Large Piles 2.

Note however that this background object name represents a lot of object types, including skeletons in spider nests, a lot of stuff in the Underground desert and various other objects (abandoned tents, etc.).

You need to really highlight the Large Piles 2 on the map and zoom every time to identify if it's a sword shrine - in Terrafirma you can immediately see if it's a junk or a real one.

*edit* Additionally, the Enchanted Sword can also be looted from the Golden and Titanium Crates.

Seeds

It has been confirmed by various players that using a seed where someone got a shrine, doesn't necessarily means you will also get it.

However certain seeds seem to always have a shrine, this seems to be the case for secret "Drunk world' seed 05162020.

In the world seed 3.3.2.875331118 for example, I got a shrine, you can try but you will not necessarily have one.

What about the other rarer sword in the Sword in Stone?

Prior to 1.4, every not-junk sword in stone had a low percentage of chance to drop the Arkhalis instead of the Enchanted Sword. It has now been replaced by the slightly weaker Terragrim.

Arkhalis is now a rare drop in the Expert Mode treasure bags, along with the whole Arkhalis set.
